Business intelligence (BI) software provider Business Objects said on Tuesday it had entered into a definitive agreement to acquire the privately-held information visualisation and presentation software company, Infommersion.

In an all-cash transaction of approximately $40m (£22m), Business Objects said it expected the deal to be closed by the end of December.

The company has been aggressive in its acquisition strategy and in bringing out new products, and last week launched Business Object XI, which uses a new structured command system.

Founded in 2002, Infommersion develops information visualization and presentation software that allows individuals and businesses to access, analyse, and share data. Business Objects will acquire the patents on this technology when the deal goes through.

"We believe the acquisition of Infommersion will allow us to bring visual innovation to business users in ways never seen before," said John Schwarz, chief executive of Business Objects, in a statement.
