Caldera posted a smaller-than-expected loss in its third quarter Tuesday but only a 9 percent improvement in total sales from the year-ago quarter.

In the quarter, the maker of Linux-based Internet software lost $7.5 million, or 19 cents a share, on sales of $1.2 million. The sales figure marks only a 9 percent increase from the year-ago quarter when the company lost $2.2 million, or 13 cents a share, on sales of $1.1 million.
