Dell Computer Corp. Chairman and CEO Michael Dell said that the component shortage that has hurt the computer industry earlier this year appears to have eased.

Dell said that as far as the Round Rock, Texas, PC maker is concerned, component prices are falling for the whole PC industry. He spoke during a question-and-answer session with reporters Thursday at the company’s Direct Connect customer confab.

Falling component prices would point to an increase in supply, whereas many industry observers expected the tightness on PC processors -- and also on memory -- to continue.

"The shortages aren’t all they were cracked up to be," Dell said. "We’re starting to see components come down (in price, faster than expected)." -- John G. Spooner, ZDNet News
