FreePC customers get to keep their PCs

FreePC Inc., the company that began offering "free PCs" and Internet access to consumers, provided that they view Internet advertising, is now offering a truly free PC. The company, which merged with eMachines Inc. earlier in the year, will abandon its free Internet access for advertising program, according to a memo sent to customers. That means that some 25,000 FreePC customers will have to find a new ISP service after Feb. 14. The upside, however, is that they will be allowed to keep their FreePCs, built by Compaq Computer Corp. or Dell Computer Corp., for no additional fee. Full story. -- John G. Spooner, ZDNet News
