Gateway get WAP, extends UK presence

Cellnet partnership brings WAP functionality to Gateway's ISP
Written by Justin Pearse, Contributor

PC maker Gateway Wednesday announced an agreement with BT Cellnet and BT Retail in an effort to embrace WAP and extend its UK retail presence.

In a change to its previous strategy in the UK market, the deal will see Gateway PCs being sold in BT stores. The Cellnet partnership brings WAP functionality to Gateway's ISP.

To celebrate the partnership and to promote Gateway's new-found commitment to all things wireless, the company is giving away a Nokia 7110 WAP mobile phone with selected PCs. To participate in the promotion customers will also have to sign a contract for one of Cellnet's three Internet tariffs.

Gateway's decision to offer PCs in BT stores mimics similar moves across the rest of Europe according its vice president of consumer services Mike Maloney.

Gateway sales units, incorporating trained sales advisors and Internet ordering, will be rolled out across 85 BT stores in the next 12 months.

The two companies have also partnered to enable subscribers to Gateway's ISP, Gateway.net, to access their email on a WAP phone through Cellnet's Genie mobile Internet service.
