I finally got one of my pals - a Microsoft faithful - to take a Hotmail breather and give Gmail a try. A die-hard user of folders, she struggled most with the "labels" that Gmail uses and the menu systems for organizing e-mail. Luckily, for her, Google has announced some enhancements to Gmail that she might like.

In a blog post today, the company said it is rolling out a new interface for labeling and organizing messages in Gmail, as well as keyboard shortcuts that will help users move things around. The changes aren't huge but Google stresses the simplification of the new process, noting that "it hasn't helped that some common tasks have been more complicated than they should be."

The shortcuts and new menus are being rolled out to Gmail accounts today so they may not be immediately available for all users.
