Hitachi Data Systems on Tuesday unveiled an entry-level storage system designed to help small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) manage their data more easily.

Speaking at the launch in Singapore, Ravi Rajendran, general manager for ASEAN (the Association of Southeast Asian Nations) at Hitachi Data Systems (HDS), said the product is a "low-cost, entry-level" storage system with features typically found on enterprise-class storage products.

Dubbed Hitachi Simple Modular Storage 100, the product includes RAID 6 for data protection, and support for multiple operating systems, as well as SAS (Serial Attached SCSI) and SATA (Serial Advanced Technology Attachment) drives. It also has an auto-migration feature that makes it easy for businesses to upgrade to higher capacities.

Targeted at SMEs with fewer than 1,000 employees, as well as enterprises with distributed branch offices, the new HDS storage system comes with a basic configuration of six hard disk drives with a single controller, and prices start from about $5,000 (£2,454). It is available now worldwide.
