OK, it's almost St. Patrick's Day, but couldn't resist sharing this tidbit from HolidayLEDs.com, which ran a Christmas tree light recycling program over the 2007 holidays.
All told (or tolled in this case), the company collected more than 3,000 pounds of old-fangled Christmas lights from around 5,000 different people. The first 100 donors got a free set of LED lights in exchange and anyone who got their lights in before Jan. 31 of this year got a coupon toward a set of new lights. The company continues to accept donations of old lights for anyone who wants to get rid of them, although you won't get anything in exchange right now. It plans to expand its promotional campaign come Christmas 2008.
