House committee to tame 'Carnivore'?

The House Judiciary Committee on Monday heard comments on the FBI's Internet snooping system, called "Carnivore," to determine whether the new system requires specific laws to protect citizens from its use. The committee is concerned that the system could be misused by the FBI to tap any chat, e-mail exchange or other Internet communication.

The House Judiciary Committee on Monday heard comments on the FBI's Internet snooping system, called "Carnivore," to determine whether the new system requires specific laws to protect citizens from its use. The committee is concerned that the system could be misused by the FBI to tap any chat, e-mail exchange or other Internet communication. "Most private conversations of Americans are vulnerable to interception from government agents," said Rep. John Conyers Jr., D-Mich. "Should we then say, 'trust us, we are the government'?
