Intel Pentium II roadmap splits two ways

Intel CEO Andy Grove has confirmed that the Pentium II processor will soon be shipping as two separate as yet unnamed brands.

While he gave no firm date for availability, he suggested that a Pentium-related processor tailored for the low-end PC market would be out by July of this year, with another high-end server product shipping later in the year.

The new strategy reflects the difficulty that Intel is having in addressing an increasingly divergent marketplace, as clients get thinner and servers fatter. Intel is trying to reconcile these two directions while protecting economies of scale in its manufacturing process.
