in brief Sydney-based internet service provider Comcen has today announced the acquisition of Australis as part of its plans to expand nationally.

Australis is an internet service provider offering broadband and mobile access to business customers in Victoria.

Comcen marketing manager Bill McArthur told ZDNet Australia that his company plans to offer voice capabilities to Australis customers. Comcen will gain greater access to regional Victoria via Australis' existing customer base.

"We are pleased to strike a deal with the Australis group. They have a strong presence in their area and we want to welcome them to the Comcen family," he said.

Comcen has previously acquired similar companies and plans to make other acquisitions to reach new areas. "Currently in the marketplace the larger industry players are focused on the bigger companies. We as a mid-sized firm feel there is a niche in small- to mid-sized firms that may be looking for an exit strategy," McArthur said.
