SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Linux gaming company Loki Entertainment Software, of Tustin, Calif., announced at the Game Developers Conference on Wednesday a multicompany project aimed at creating a Linux-based 3-D audio programming interface for games. Called OpenAL the open-source, cross-platform audio library gives developers the ability to increase immersion by adding the proper special audio effects to 3-D spaces. Sound card maker Creative Technology Ltd. (CREAF) plans to release Linux drivers that will work with OpenAL. In addition, Creative is evaluating MacOS and Windows implementations of the OpenAL standard. -- Robert Lemos, ZDNet News
