MS confirms VXtreme buy

Microsoft has confirmed the acquisition of streaming media maker VXtreme, saying the purchase would enable it to enjoy greater bandwidth flexibility.

Paul Maritz, group vice president of platforms and applications at Microsoft, said the VXtreme technology will provide future versions of NetShow with the "scalability to handle multiple bit rates and bandwidths ... for intranets as well as the Internet ... from 28.8 kilbits to one megabit."

Pete Mountanos, CEO and president of VXtreme, said the deal would provide its customers including CNN with "a roadmap to a standard platform to build a business around".

Maritz said that the recent agreement with Progressive Networks would help to establish a single streaming standard. "Our aim is to build a very strong platform. We feel the deals are complementary."
