Nano, courtesy Tata Motors. The Indian auto maker, Tata, is pleasantly beleaguered. In a globally weak auto market, they have been swamped with orders for their little Nano, the world's cheapest mass-produced car.

The first Nanos are due to go to buyers in India in July of this year. They will eventually come to the U.S. though these first models do not meet U.S. auto safety and emissions standards.

The Nano in India costs a fraction of other mass-produced gas-burning sub-compacts.
