Netscape Communications Corp. last week posted the source code for the first developer release of Communicator 5.0, the company's flagship Web browser and Internet authoring package.

Available at http://www.mozilla.org, the code includes versions for Mac OS, Windows and Linux. Netscape said enhancements made to the code by third-party developers will be incorporated into later developer releases.

New in Communicator 5.0 is support for Extensible Markup Language, an emerging standard for describing Web content, as well as the company's recently announced Open Java VM Interface.

In addition, the new version of Communicator is based on the Resource Description Framework, which Netscape said will enhance the software's search and navigation features.

In other Netscape news, the company last week released the final version of Communicator 4.05. The update features a new Security Info dialog and loads Java applets more quickly, the company said. It is available free from Netscape's Web site.
