Netscape to launch free ISP Tuesday

AOL's Netscape set to challenge Freeserve in the potentially lucrative free-ISP market.
Written by Will Knight, Contributor

US browser and portal leviathan Netscape will announce its arrival in the European ISP market Tuesday with the British launch of a free Internet access and content service, Netscape Online.

The president and CEO of AOL Europe, Andreas Schmidt, will describe how Netscape Online plans to conquer Europe. However, the question of everybody's lips is, will Netscape's name and reputation be enough to shake Freeserve from its position at the summit of the UK Internet access market?

Netscape has promised that a range of exciting content and distribution deals will be announced tomorrow, but it remains to be seen how appealing these will be to UK Internet users.

AOL, which purchased Netscape late last year, is the world's largest Internet service provider, and until recently held the UK's largest ISP subscriber base. But it was quickly superseded by Dixons' Freeserve, which charges no monthly access fee.
