SINGAPORE--DHL unveiled Friday a new service center in the island-state, which is expected to boost its cargo handling capacity to over 10.5 million shipments by 2011.

Located within the vicinity of Singapore Changi Airport, the new service center--dubbed eXpo Service Center @ Changi South--is its fifth and largest service center in the country to date. It occupies 76,600 square feet and has a staff strength of about 100.

Alec Ang, general manager of DHL Express Singapore, said during the launch that the new center was built at a cost of about S$9 million (US$5.91 million).

The facility features new scanning technologies that recognize shipments for pre-clearance, and shipments are proactively monitored round-the-clock by DHL's Quality Control Center (QCC).

The QCC is equipped with a global shipment management system that is able to alert its analysts when certain operational actions do not happen within a fixed set of timings.

According to DHL, this real-time monitoring of individual shipments allows for better issues management and enables the logistics company to identify potential problems and recommend rectification strategies before the situation is magnified.

"That allows more shipments to actually flow through, and this is a significant step, because currently, you don't see that in the industry," said Ang.

DHL is said to have spent over S$3 million (US$1.97 million) on IT equipment and infrastructure for the new center.
