Use a GSM phone? Security has been compromised
Two Israeli researchers have penetrated the security guarding GSM digital phones with the discovery of what they describe as a flawed algorithm.
According to a report in Wired, Alex Biryukov and Adi Shamir are this week to publish a paper detailing how a PC with 128MB RAM can decipher the A5/1 GSM scrambling algorithm of a call in less than one second. However the paper points out that actually intercepting a GSM transmission is not yet practical for individuals.
Shamir is a co-inventor of the RSA public crypto system.
