Opera Mini serves up 1 petabyte of data in January 2009

Opera Mini generated more than 122 million MB of data for operators around the world. Thankfully, Opera Mini compresses 90% on average or else the data usage could have been up to 1.1 billion MB of data. It was a bit interesting to see that Armenia was the leading country for consumption growth with usage jumping more than 2800% with users viewing an average of 669 web pages in January 2009.
The CEO of Opera, Jon von Tetzchner, said:
Looking back on a full year of mobile Web growth, it is easy to see why mobile devices will become the primary device for Web usage in most of the world. Developing countries may lead the way due to the sheer prevalence of mobile devices versus PCs, but the solid growth rates in developed countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom and Germany, show that the entire world is moving in this direction. These numbers underscore how critical it is that all Web-enabled devices come equipped with a quality Web browser.
The great thing about Opera Mini is that it runs on millions of devices that support Java. Unfortunately,T-Mobile USA blocks these Java applications and doesn't let you use this on most of their devices since they want to get a cut on the data usage in addition to their data fees they already charge.
