Advanced Micro Devices will not deliver its Phenom desktop processors until late in the fourth quarter, the company has said. So it’s prepping a higher-performance Athlon 64 X2 6400+ to tide buyers over, numerous press reports have stated. The chip is pretty much a clock speed bump, given that it will run at 3.2GHz, according to those reports.
But the chipmaker has an interesting name for the new chip: The Black Edition, according to sites such as The Tech Report. (Link: here.)
Maybe there are a bunch of Johnny Cash fans in AMD’s marketing department? Then again, maybe not. But, from a marketing perspective, I give AMD a thumbs up for the idea of making something special out of what would normally be a routine introduction of a processor that, while faster, isn't expected to top Intel's Core 2 Duo. Black Edition appears to only refer to the processor-in-a-box version of the chip sold via distributors. But it is kind of catchy.
