Software maker DataViz on Monday unveiled an application that brings PowerPoint presentations, along with other Microsoft Office features, to Palm handheld devices.

Documents To Go Professional Edition 4.0, which also offers other Word and Excel capabilities, lets Palm users view PowerPoint files through an application called Slideshow To Go. Users can navigate presentations in outline, speaker notes and slide views on their diminutive devices, a potential boon when a larger notebook computer might be at a disadvantage, as in a taxicab or on a plane.

Other new features in version 4.0 include Sheet To Go, which offers the ability to work with Excel-compatible spreadsheets and is compatible as well with Lotus 1-2-3 and Quattro Pro, according to the Trumbull, Conn, company. Users can create and edit formulas, format cells, recalculate data, and insert rows, columns and new spreadsheets.

The software also lets users save and synchronize large documents to expansion cards on Palm m500 series handhelds and exchange data with two or more PCs and Macs. Slideshow To Go is available only in a version for the Windows operating system.

Palm plans to ship a version of Documents To Go 4.0 with the m500 series. Customers who already have purchased version 3.0 of the software or an m500 handheld will be able to download version 4.0 free of charge within 30 days of their date of purchase.

An add-on kit includes DataViz Mail for Windows only. The tool synchronizes Outlook and Lotus Notes email and attachments. When Documents To Go Professional Edition is purchased from retail stores or from DataViz, the kit is included at no extra charge; otherwise, it costs US$19.95.

Documents To Go Professional Edition 4.0 is priced at US$69.95 and is expected to be available by the end of August.
