Read my mIPS: no new faxes!

I have a wired and wireless-ed up blogger cave. But you won't find a

fax machine here.

Why am I writing a post about this?

Yesterday I was talking to a friend who wanted to borrow my "fax machine." Seems she had to fax some documents over to her mortgage company.

As she already had suspected, I confirmed to her that I don't have a fax machine. Haven't had one for years.

Readers, I know what some of you may be thinking.

How about a combination fax-scanner-printer? Well, no. I never have cottoned to those combination units. My separate scanner and printer work fine, thx.

Then what about a fax card?- Well, I have one of those, but of course. Yet the fax card, and the requisite software, works best with a dial-out and dial-in number. But although I have several phone numbers, they are either software-based Internet phone numbers or my BlackBerry number. I don't have a PSTN line, nor even phone equipment hooked up via an Access Point.

So, Russ, what do you do if you need to send a fax?- One of two things. If I have to send an invoice and include stuff such as taxi receipts, I simply scan these in, build a PDF file, and then send the PDF along as an attachment. Most all my accounts accept this.

And as for incoming faxes? First of all, I hardly receive them anymore. Plainly, e-mail attachments are the way to go. Yet if you must send me a fax, I'll go down the hill on to the trendy street below, and stop by FedEx Kinko's.
