Roaming when roaming, one solution

Virtually Speaking reader saves the day.
Written by Dan Kusnetzky, Contributor

In yesterday's post, Roaming when roaming, I discussed my experiences with my mobile phone service while traveling internationally. Less than five minutes after the post went life, I received an Email from a helpful reader suggesting that I purchase a SIM and a pay-as-you-go service plan. This reader even suggested a number of retailers that might be nearby. Virtually Speaking readers are fabulous!

At a break in the Hosting and Cloud Transformation Summit, I left the hotel and wandered down Tower Bridge Road. I found one of those retailers, purchased a SIM and "Topped Up" my account.

The hardest part of the process was persuading the service provider (T-Mobile UK) to allow me to register without having a UK postal code. Their over-the-air registration is simply hopeless and their website is only marginally better. They even have the gall to charge patrons to get registration help from a live person.

One good thing was that I learned that the service provider was offering a promotion that provided unlimited internet access for a few days. Now I know I'm in control of my mobile phone costs! This clearly demonstrates the value of owning an unlocked phone.

I'll be winging my way back from the UK Thursday and won't be able to post.
