Sony Corp. and Sun Microsystems Inc. announced plans in Tokyo on Wednesday to collaborate on creating digital consumer electronic appliances with direct access to Internet-based content and services. The two giants have already started to develop home gateway software, which will run on appliances such as set-top boxes and digital television sets that support a combination of home networking and network server technologies. Specific technologies to be supported include Sony's HAVi/i.LINK, as well as Sun's Jini, Java, Java Embedded Server and Sun Management Center. -- Robert Lemos, ZDNN.
