Spain gets third 4G network as Yoigo's LTE goes live
Spain's summer of 4G continues as Yoigo, the country's fourth placed mobile operator, switched on its network in the Spanish capital Madrid on Thursday.
According to Yoigo, 4G coverage will be extended to 48 percent of the population — around 22.5 million people — by the end of this year.
During 2013, the network will be extended to cities with populations of more than 70,000 residents — 113 in all.
The theoretical maximum download speed for the network is 75Mbps, but Yoigo said the average is between 20Mbps and 40Mbps.
There will be no price premium for 4G though — Yoigo customers will be able to use LTE at no extra cost.
In May, Yoigo announced it was to become the first mobile operator in Spain to launch a 4G network. It was subsequently pipped to the post by Orange, the third biggest carrier in the country, and number two operator Vodafone, which switched on their networks in July and May respectively.
Spain's largest operator, Movistar, has yet to announce its 4G plans, although it's thought the operator is working on a network upgrade that could bring in LTE before the end of the year.
