Tech execs caution against knee-jerk reaction to Net security

In the wake of denial-of-service attacks carried out earlier this month against several high-profile Web sites, including ZDNet (ZDZ), Congress is talking about passing legislation to better protect Internet firms. However, industry executives, reluctant to invite what many fear would be government meddling, are urging lawmakers to take an enlightened laissez-faire attitude toward the issue.

In the wake of denial-of-service attacks carried out earlier this month against several high-profile Web sites, including ZDNet (ZDZ), Congress is talking about passing legislation to better protect Internet firms. However, industry executives, reluctant to invite what many fear would be government meddling, are urging lawmakers to take an enlightened laissez-faire attitude toward the issue. "We would prefer that the government focus on enforcing the laws," said Dan Rosensweig, president and CEO of ZDNet, which publishes ZDNet News.
