Toshiba has announced a new phone at the Mobile World Congress that promises to "revolutionize the mobile entertainment world."

Enter the TG01 -- a poorly-named but colorful 4.1-inch 800x480 VGA touchscreen handset that is just 9.9mm thick and features a 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon QSD8250 chipset.

In other words, bigger and slimmer than the competition (iPhone: 12.33mm).

It's LED backlit, too, with variable backlight to improve the appearance of dark movie scenes and dynamic gamma correction to reduce color stepping.

According to reports, users will be able to interact with the device using a virtual trackpad that will appear on screen. Instead of an accelerometer, the phone will use a "G-sensor" that allows you to tilt the phone around a central axis. Hello, gestures!

Specs include HSDPA 3G and AGPS or GPS connectivity, Wi-Fi, GPS, Bluetooth, a microSD card to expand upon the device's 512MB of memory (to 32GB) and DivX support.

Oh, and it sports Microsoft's Windows Mobile 6.1 (6.5 when it ships) with full Adobe Flash support (even though Qualcomm showcased Google Android running on Snapdragon at CES earlier this year) and IE Mobile 6. Notice the GUI -- custom!

Note: That means a resistive, rather than capacitive, touchscreen. A stylus will come in the box.

Also, there's no 3.5mm headphone socket.

The TG01 is due this summer in Europe (no word elsewhere). No news on which carrier will provide service, either.

Random factoid of possible interest: Toshiba is the manufacturer of the Microsoft Zune.
