UK's Prince wins right to preserve domain

UK IT services company Prince has gained an unexpectedly early victory in its battle with US giant Prince Sports Group in what was expected to become a test case over domain name registrations.

Prince Sports Group, best known for its tennis racquets, had challenged Prince plc's right to register the 'prince.com' domain name but quietly dropped its suit on October 15 before any verdicts had been delivered. The case was expected to become influential as several high-profile companies attempt to preserve the brand equity of their trademark names on the Internet. Domain name registrant Network Solutions was also named in the suit.

Prince plc filed for the case to be dismissed on September 17, saying its business could in no way be deemed similar to that of Prince Sports Group so no confusion could arise in the minds of the public.
