Sure, he helped invent the Internet, but can Vint Cerf help run it? The 57-year-old Internet pioneer was elected chairman of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN). He assumed the one-year, unpaid position this week at ICANN's annual meeting. On Thursday, Cerf was among the board members who unanimously approved seven new top level domains, additions to the existing .com and .net Web address suffixes. Currently senior vice president for Internet architecture and technology at WorldCom Corp., Cerf said he believes ICANN should have a limited role in the Internet's development. In the 1970s, as a Stanford University professor, he helped create the TCP/IP protocol for Internet communication. -- Ben Charny, ZDNet News
