VMWare responds with open source in virtualization war

In this battle for virtualization mind share, it's apparently not enough to make things open source. Winning allies within the open source movement is also important.

Yesterday we reported about how XenSource plans to expand the reach of its virtualization software through an OEM edition and help from its new corporate parent, Citrix.

Now VMWare has responded with two words -- open source.

The company is not just pushing its VMWare tools on Sourceforge, it has won an alliance with Canonical, makers of Ubuntu, which has released a virtualization specific version of its Linux dubbed Jeos.

Jeos (pronounced juice)  is an acronym, meaning Just Enough Operating System, but maybe the wizards at Canonical aren't up on their Google, because there's already a Java project with that name.

At the VMWorld event Business Objects demonstrated an appliance running on top of Jeos.

In this battle for virtualization mind share, it's apparently not enough to make things open source. Winning allies within the open source movement is also important.

So let's see. You've got the open source vendor tied in with Microsoft through Citrix, and the proprietary vendor pushing tools through open source and Ubuntu.

Who's the good guy, or is it all good?
