AOL on Monday officially named Alexander Gounares chief technology officer.

Gounares had been CTO of Microsoft's online services division. As Mary Jo Foley noted Friday, Microsoft and Yahoo have been prepping for their ad-platform partnership. Gounares' roll was a bit up in the air at Microsoft. On Friday, AllthingsDigital reported that Gounares was headed to AOL.

At AOL, Gounares will develop the technical strategy, partnerships and lead the company's engineering team. He will also oversee AOL's internal IT and CIO. Gounares will report to AOL CEO Tim Armstrong. Gounares' first mission will be to expand AOL's engineering centers and lure new talent.

While at Microsoft, Gounares, 37, was credited with working on Microsoft's ad platform, Bing, MSN and Virtual Earth.

Gounares will officially start May 13.
