Openreach lists 159 exchanges set for a fibre boost in 2011...

BT Openreach has named another wave of exchanges due to be upgraded to fibre - enabling them to offer superfast broadband services from BT or its ISP customers.

Exchanges on the list include Birmingham Central, Taunton in Somerset, Wapping in London and Mumbles in Wales.

The list of 159 exchanges is the next largest wave of upgrades announced since BT named 303 exchanges in March. The fibre upgrades are part of its next-generation broadband rollout - it has pledged to spend £2.5bn to roll out fibre-based broadband to two-thirds of the UK by 2015.

The latest round of 159 exchanges are due to be upgraded with fibre next year, between September and December, according to BT Openreach. The lion's share - about 70 per cent - will get fibre-to-the-cabinet (FTTC) technology, which enables download speeds of up to 40Mbps, with the rest getting both FTTC and fibre to the home (FTTH).

While FTTH can support up to 100Mbps, BT said it believes FTTC technology could potentially enable up to 60Mbps in future, and also support uploads of up to 15Mbps - compared with up to 10Mbps currently.

Last week BT also announced a plan to bring improved broadband speeds to the whole of Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly via fibre and other next-generation technologies.
