Enel officially announced Wednesday that it has acquired Infostrada for 11 billion euro ($9.5 billion U.S.). Infostrada will be merged with Wind, already owned by Enel, forging one of the largest Italian companies for telecommunications and the Internet, with a combined 12 million users. Enel is the partly state-owned public utility for electricity. Infostrada specializes in fixed telecommunications and the Internet, and Wind (a joint-venture with France Telecom) specializes in mobile telecommunications. Full story (in Italian). -- ZDNet Italy
