Russian New Year twist is hype experts agree
Worries over a new twist to the Russian New Year virus are overhyped according to anti-virus experts.
Discovered in January, Russian New Year is contracted through clicking on an HTML link on a Web page. Reports suggest the virus can now be sent via e-mail, with the link embedded or as an attachment meaning victims are unaware they are being attacked.
Technical director of Symantec Kevin Street is not too concerned by the development. "It is not a big problem and we have had no reports of issues with it. There are a whole bunch of fixes for it," he said.
This was echoed by Jack Clark, product manager at Network Associates. "It's not going to be as big as people think," he said. "It is nothing too special but does highlight the dangers of email. Trust no one," he said.
