The nation's largest telco, Telstra, has unveiled a new iPhone plan which will see new customers getting a $100 account credit when they purchase a new plan.

First reported by The Australian Financial Review this morning and confirmed by a Telstra spokesperson, the deal is ongoing until the 26 December. The credit will automatically be applied to customers' bills.

The offer comes after Telstra's recent reshuffling of top management and overhaul of fixed line broadband plans. The telco's iPhone plans have consistently been priced significantly higher than its competitors; however, the telco's Next G network also offers an enhanced level of coverage compared with those of its rivals.

Currently Optus holds the lion's share of the iPhone market, which is set to increase, according to Optus' latest financial analysis report (PDF). Factors behind the telco's dominance include aggressive pricing and larger data allowances.

Whilst the $100 discount makes Telstra's $80, 16GB iPhone plan more competitive, Optus' equivalent plan offers 1GB of data and no upfront charge (Telstra charges $49) for a 24-month contract.

And according to Optus' website it is also currently offering a bonus $100 bill credit for new and re-contracting customers. It is not known if this offer is the first step in a new pricing strategy designed to give Telstra an edge in the market. The offer is not available to existing customers.
