If Miz Nicci -- that's Managing Editor Nicci Noteboom -- is going to ditch this place to go gallivanting around in Hawaii, then, by golly, I'm going to have some fun, too.

Fun, my mother always told me, is where you find it. So, natch, I've found it in downloads.

Check out the following; I guarantee they'll add a note of frivolity to your computing experience:

PC-Pete Screen Saver depicts the animated adventures of PC-Pete, who journeys through the universe in his flying saucer to find talented aliens, such as the four-headed "Space Girls." You can change the spaceship's skin, modify the type of propulsion, mute the digital sound effects and advise Pete on the things he wants on his pizza. (Free/Win 95-98-NT) Click for more.

Speak makes it possible for Microsoft Agent animated characters to read your documents, email messages, Web pages or Clipboard text aloud. It also supports voice recognition and can run various applications and perform simple tasks such as shutting down your computer. Or, you can create scheduled reminders that are read when the time is right. (Shareware/Win 95-98-NT) Click for more.

Mouse Odometer measures the distance your mouse moves in your choice of inches, feet, miles, meters or kilometers, so if your mousing finger complains at the end of the day, you'll know why. You can also do things like comparing trips and adding a new Internet link for every mile you travel. (Shareware/Win 95-98-NT) Click for more.

All of these downloads are cool. But my personal favorite is Mouse Odometer. I've always believed I surf faster and farther than Jesse -- and now I can prove it. And when Nicci gets back from the Islands, I can tell her how much surfing I did while she was loafing on a beach.
