Kindle Oasis starting at $289.99

Amazon has revamped the design of the Kindle with the launch of a version called Oasis that improves battery life, is lighter and features an ergonomic grip.

Like Amazon's general mission with the Kindle the aim is to make the device disappear so you can read. The catch is that the Kindle Oasis will run $289.99 and ship April 27.

Here's a look at the Oasis, the eighth generation of Kindle, and the specs (see CNET's first take):

  • 4.6 ounces;
  • 3.4 mm at its thinnest point;
  • Featherweight polymer frame;
  • A dual battery design with a battery in the device and cover;
  • Wi-Fi or Wi-Fi and 3G;
  • An improved Paperwhite display with 300 ppi resolution.

The Oasis now takes over for the Voyage, which runs $199.99, as the high-end device of the Kindle family.
