When the first PDAs based on the Newton operating system came to market in 1992, many pundits hailed their arrival as the technology around which Apple could build a new fortune. However, Newton has since floundered under the weight of poor reviews and low sales.

The rumours come as Apple prepares to launch two new handheld products in the US: the MessagePad 2000 and eMate 300.

The Journal also suggests that Apple plans to lay off 20 per cent of its work force in the light of recent financial woes.
