Apple's tactics of pushing Safari to all iTunes users seems to have been successful in putting Safari 3.1 on the browser map, although at the expense of Firefox.

In data released by Net Applications for April, last month saw Firefox's market share drop by nearly 1% following strong month-on-month growth over the past 12 months. Over the same period usage of IE 7 and IE 6 grew (by 0.15% and 1.05% respectively), while Opera 9.x dropped by 0.04%.

It seems that playing dirty is a good way to increase your market share. Although that not news since malware has been using similar tricks for years.

It'll be interesting to see the results for next month. Following pressure, Apple changed the way that it offered Safari via the Apple Software Update on April 18, so it'll be interesting to see if Apple can keep on capturing market share once it's has to rely on less deceptive distribution methods.
