Apple's iOS zips past RIM as Blackberry product vacuum continues

Apple's iOS market share surged past RIM, which dropped 4.2 percentage points of market share between February and May, according to comScore data. And RIM's slide can get worse.

Apple's iOS market share surged past RIM, which dropped 4.2 percentage points of market share between February and May, according to comScore data.

Android remains the top dog in the U.S. smartphone market with 38.1 percent share, up 5.1 points from February.

Here's a look at the standings based on 76.8 million U.S. smartphone users:

Overall, these standings could get worse for RIM before they get better. For starters, RIM still has a product vacuum and new devices are slow to get off the runway. Meanwhile, RIM has cut its outlook. For its part, Apple has both Verizon and AT&T pitching the iPhone and a new device is highly likely.

Not surprisingly, Android remains in the lead and will continue to grab share. Samsung, LG and Motorola---all Android partners---are leading on the device front.
