AT&T was founded in 1876 with a mission to build the first long distance network.
With the merger of AT&T Corp. and SBC Communications Inc., AT&T is now one of the largest global telecommunications and networking companies. The company provides both local and long distance telephone services, wireless service, and DSL internet access in the US.
AT&T Inc. holds a 60 percent ownership interest in Cingular Wireless, which is the No. 1 U.S. wireless services provider with 57.3 million wireless customers.
Since the merger, the new AT&T has pioneered new technologies and developed new products and services in areas which include: IP network management, optical technology, automatic speech recognition, next-generation text-to-speech products, and voice over Internet Protocol technologies.
