A family of four with an annual income of $75,000 paid about $6,884 in local and state taxes on average 2004, or 9.2% of their income. In 2003, that family paid average taxes of $6,832, or 9.1% of their income. At $150,000, the average tax burden for a hypothetical family of four rose to 9.3% in 2004 from 9.2% in 2003. The average tax burden for families at $25,000 declined, Wall Street Journal reports. US cities with highest tax burden for 2005 include Bridgeport, Connecticut, New York, NY, Philadelphia, PA and Newark, NJ. Lowest tax burden is in Cheyenne, Wyoming, Anchorage, Alaska, Jacksonville, Florida, and Las Vegas, Nevada.
