Founded in September 1980, BMC Software makes enterprise management software designed to enable companies to better maintain their networks.

The company holds 72 software technology patents and is best known for its PATROL application management suite.

The company is headquartered in Houston, Texas, and has international headquarters in Amsterdam, The Netherlands and Singapore. Its market coverage extends to more than 50 countries, with research and development offices located around the world including the United States, France, Israel, Singapore and India.

Like many of its rivals, BMC Software opted for an acquisition strategy to beef up its portfolio. Earlier this year, the company acquired Calendra, a privately-held company providing identity management solutions, for about US$33 million in cash. Based in Paris, Calendra sells software that help businesses manage employee data and IT asset directories used to oversee and secure corporate networks.

More recently, the company released in May 2005 its BMC Performance Manager Portal and BMC Performance Manager, which enable IT organizations to better manage their IT operations based on business priorities. In September, BMC Software announced the availability of the BMC Performance Manager Developers Kit, and in October, it introduced BMC Identity Management Suite, version 5.0.
