BT's network down for 24 hours

One-third of 0800, 0845 and 0835 calls affected
Written by Jane Wakefield, Contributor

Internet service providers (ISPs), helplines and call centres were among the services affected by a huge BT network crash on Friday.

One third of all 0800, 0845 and 0835 calls failed as BT engineers worked around the clock to solve the problem. Two out of three of BT's main gateways were down. The cause of the failure has yet to be identified.

Among services affected were ISP LineOne, the RAC and the Samaritans. A spokeswoman for the Samaritans says it is too early to say how many callers were unable to get through, although she claimed the failure lasted for 24 hours. The charity is currently assessing the impact of the outage.

BT claims normal services were restored on Saturday morning.
