The cellphone and laptop are quickly becoming indispensable items on college campuses these days, as students can find everything from class and bus schedules to dining hall menus online, reports USA Today

Everything a student needs seems available online and students are becoming reliant on Internet services to stay socially and academically connected.

At some colleges this fall, students will be listening to lectures and order late-night snacks online courtesy of RAVE Wireless, an application that allows students to view campus information and more from their cellphones.

Along with accessing assignments, grades and class schedule updates, students connected to RAVE can also create blogs and school social groups.

One of the more unusual features of the RAVE wireless is that it is connected to a GPS system that can tracks cellphones. If a student feels unsafe, they set a timer. If they haven't reached their destination and turned the timer off, campus safety officials are contacted and the student located.

RAVE wireless is also experimenting with other features such as keyless entries for dorm rooms and other campus buildings, via cell phones.
