Content Management Interoperability Services (CMIS) is a standards proposal designed to help developers working with content across multiple repositories by bringing a much-needed level of interoperability to the party. IBM, Microsoft, Oracle, SAP and others are behind this initiative, but Alfresco Software is apparently the first to table a product with Verson 1.0 of the standard on board.

The concept here now is for developers to be able to participate in the public review process of CMIS Version 1.0 by testing and contributing to this open source product. This process is carried out over a two-month review period as specified by the OASIS CMIS Technical Committee (TC).

In order to support education and training on CMIS, Alfresco will host the first CMIS virtual training session designed to explore the specification and share CMIS expertise.

In a statement released last week Alfresco said that, “The objective of the CMIS specification is to deliver a common REST or Web Services API that can be used to develop write-once, run-anywhere, next generation content and social applications.”

CMIS 1.0 Public Review can be downloaded here with Alfresco Community 3.2.
