Demon loses pre-trial, UK ISPs threatened

UK ISPs face legal action for the content on their servers, even if they are not responsible for publishing it if a landmark High Court decision is upheld.

Today's pre-trial ruling against Demon Internet found in favour of Laurence Godfrey who is suing the ISP for allegedly carrying defamatory statements on its 'newsnet' newsgroup that purport to be from him.

The online remarks -- which Mr Justice Morland described as "squalid and obscene" -- have been traced to an unknown, non-Demon user in the US. Yet Demon has found itself in the dock.
