EMC joins SmartWay fold

Storage tech giant has become part of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's SmartWay Transport Partnership.

Storage tech giant has become part of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's SmartWay Transport Partnership. What this means, mainly, is that the company is putting a sharper focus on its distribution practices over the next three years. That means it will be looking at ways to improve its trucking operations, and increase its use of reusable and returnable packaging, among other things. SmartWay partners are hoping to eliminate between 33 million and 66 million metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions plus up to 200,000 tons of nitrogen oxide emissions per year by 2012.

I'm thinking that active SmartWay membership may turn into one of those checkoff items when you do due diligence during the procurement process. Dell, Hewlett-Packard and IBM are all listed, but I was surprised to see that Cisco Systems is not (maybe that's because of its distribution relationships and other supply chain considerations). What's the status of your hardware suppliers?
