EMC secures majority share of Data Domain

EMC now controls 82.1 percent of the deduplication storage system provider, and has outlined where it will fit in the storage giant's line-up

EMC on Monday announced it has acquired majority ownership of Data Domain and will complete the purchase at the end of July.

The company also outlined where Data Domain, a provider of deduplication storage systems, will fit in the storage giant's line-up.

EMC, which outbid NetApp for Data Domain, said it now controls 82.1 percent of Data Domain shares after a tender offer.

In a statement, EMC said Data Domain will lead a division focused on the latest disk-based backup, recovery and archive products. Data Domain chief executive Frank Slootman will lead the division and report to Joe Tucci, EMC's chairman and chief executive, and Frank Hauck, executive vice president in charge of EMC's storage business.

EMC also said it plans to increase its investment in the division and build complementary technologies around it. EMC added that it expects the unit to continue to grow at double-digit rates and hit $1bn (£600m) in revenue in 2010.
