Fox denies Phantom Menace Web piracy reports

Reports Wednesday that pirated copies of the new Star Wars film The Phantom Menace are circulating on the Net have been denied by UK distributor Fox.

According to the Times, sites outside the U.K. were offering copies of the movie although the newspaper confirmed it did not actually download any. The Times claimed the sites would now be shut down.

A spokeswoman for Fox denied any evidence had been found either in the U.S. or on U.K. Web sites, although she admitted LucasFilms are tracking sites carefully. "Until evidence has been found we are not making any comment," she said.

A statement may be made later in the week.
